Getting checked in.

The breaking news is that baby is coming.  After waiting 5 days post due date we saw the doctor.  We had to have a biophysical profile ultrasound.  The baby was in great shape but the amniotic fluid was pretty low.  So on the advice of our doctor we decided to go for induction of labor starting this morning at 8AM.  So after waiting 40 and six days the baby was going to arrive.  We just had to wait one more night before we head into the hospital.  It was a surreal feeling.  After anxiously waiting for the surprise visit from the labor fairy, it was a weird feeling knowing that it was going to happen in t he morning.  Well not exactly in the morning.  We are starting with Cytotec (a synthetic prostaglandin that prepares the cervix for delivery).  It is easier on the body than the next steps (different drugs).  So last night we had one more night to hang out a just a couple.  What was funny to me was that I was ready for the surprise.  I can react in a minute with a bag and everything in the car, boom ready to go, but the idea of knowing when things were going to happen put me into a quiet panic.  What were we missing?  Where do we need to go? What needs to happen?  In reality all of those things were prepared for weeks.  The bags were packed, we had food (luna bars and some applesauce packets), and I had all the various electronics (computers, kindles, cameras, phones and all the various chargers) in my bag.  So there wasn’t really much to prepare.  It just felt like we needed to do something.  So for our last night together we went to grab ice cream.  I had chocolate on a waffle cone, while Sara had a strawberry malt.  We sat and ate our ice cream and looked at each other.  We went through all the different emotions, from fear to laughter.  It was at that moment that I kind of realized that we were ready.  So we thought we should do something fun.  We grabbed Rio and the camera went to park near where I work.  It is right along Lake Superior and it gave Rio a chance to swim and a chance for us to take the last pictures of pregnant Sara.  It was a fun little excursion. 275 277 262 260 249 248

We returned home to stare at each other for a little bit.  We got our bags out. Made sure it was all ready.  We watched a little Jimmy Fallon.  Then we tried to go to sleep.  We pretty much knew we wouldn’t sleep well. Too much excitement, too much planning coming to fruition.  So lights were out and we were settled in. Then about 1AM the skunk showed up.  The skunk must live in the alley below our bedroom window.  We smell it all the time.  It isn’t overpowering like being sprayed, but just enough to alert me to their presence.  That was also enough to alert Rio, who is a hater of skunks.  She was restless.  Then at 330am the yipping started.  Foxes.  What does the fox say?  YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip YipYipYip YipYipYipYip. FOX0524c1 Which would have be pretty cool except for the fact that I was trying to sleep and Rio was on high alert which meant there was barking and leg stepping on.  I took Rio outside to see if she could calm down.  Which she did, for a while.  She got up again at 530.  So I just tried to sleep, but it was not to be.  A few restless hours later and we had to get into the hospital to get things started.  Luckily Sara with her ear plugs slept much better.  We made it in almost on time.  So things got started around 930.  Each course of the drugs happens at 4 hour intervals.  So hopefully we won’t need too many courses.  It looks right now that they are going to delay the next dose of cytotec because contractions are going so good.  I’m not sure how long this will all take but things are now on track.  Katie is coming. View from our hospital room
